Province of North Holland in black and white

This series has started out of the series (NoordHolland-Vierkant = Northern Holland-Square), which was an assignment for black and white photographs on a large print size of 54x54cm for the picture itself. Because I don’t posses a 6x6 camera it was difficult to see a normal landscape and in the same time to think in square pictures. For my 5 mega pixel digital camera that time, it was technically a step too far to process a good picture of such a size, so I had to fell back on my familiar analogous Nikon 90X. I choose for a 400 ASA film for the advantage of a large exposure space and also to use the estranging effect of the grain of the film. This estranging effect has been made stronger by a adaptation (after scanning of the negatives) in the computer, to compare with a mix of the old fashioned dark room technique of ‘solarisation’ (extra exposure to light during the developing of the picture) and the technique of posterizing in the computer (digital shortening of the tonal scale with a paint effect). The square size has its own composition rules and not every subject is suited to it. Because one sees in a more wider perspective normally, and also the assigned photographs were taken in that format, this means also the start of this series ‘NoordHolland’ = Northern province of Holland. And as a counterpart in the same time a separate album ‘NoordHolland-in-Kleur' = ‘North Holland in Colours’ was born.
